Year 2 English: what your child learns
Many children speak well but lose marks when they write: spelling, capital letters, full stops and grammar. Our English practice works on exactly that. Spelling words return again and again until they stick; sentence practice builds the habit of capital letters and correct punctuation; reading questions check understanding. Practice is matched to your child’s year and the National Curriculum, from Year 1 phonics to Year 6 SATs spelling, punctuation and grammar.
What Your Child Will Learn in Year 2 English
Spelling
Over 280 spelling questions — the full Year 2 statutory spelling list, gap-fill spelling practice, and extra practice on trickier patterns, plus homophones (words that sound alike, like ‘there’ and ‘their’) and common suffixes and prefixes.
The Year 2 statutory spelling list is set out in the national curriculum and tested directly in the KS1 SATs spelling test.
Grammar & punctuation
Sentence-level grammar and punctuation practice — question marks, exclamation marks, and joining words.
Grammar and punctuation is one of the three papers in the KS1 SATs taken at the end of Year 2.
Writing sentences
Finding and fixing mistakes in sentences — missing capital letters, full stops, and other punctuation.
Being able to spot and correct sentence errors is part of the Year 2 writing curriculum.
Reading & comprehension
Short passages with retrieval questions, plus vocabulary-building word-bank practice.
Reading comprehension is tested directly in the KS1 SATs reading paper.
How You Can Help at Home
Practise the statutory spelling words little and often
Short, frequent spelling practice beats one long weekly session — little and often is how spellings stick.
Talk about punctuation while reading together
Ask ‘why is there a question mark there?’ when reading aloud — it builds the same understanding tested in the grammar paper.
Use the parent portal to see real gaps
Rather than guessing, the Out of School parent dashboard shows exactly which spelling patterns or grammar rules need more practice.
Year 2 & KS1 SATs Relevance
The KS1 SATs are taken at the end of Year 2 and include a reading paper and a combined spelling, grammar and punctuation test. The spelling, grammar and comprehension content here is matched directly to what those papers cover.
